Lake George
Few resort communities in the US are as storied as Lake George. Situated on the western banks of its namesake lake, the town is the smallest community in Warren County in upstate New York. Despite its small size, Lake George holds a special place in the history of the nation as the site of many battles, some of which dating as far back as the 1700s.
Lake George also has the distinction of being named after the lake that has been called one of the USA’s first vacation destinations. Surrounded by the breathtaking Adirondack wilderness, Lake George boasts pristine, crystal clear waters that inspired Thomas Jefferson to say, “Without comparison, the most beautiful water I ever saw.”
The Lake
Lake George is known as “The Queen of the American Lakes”, and rightly so. Found in the foothills of the Adirondacks, it spans a length of 32 miles and is home to over 300 islands. For nearly 200 years, the lake has been a popular vacation destination for visitors of all ages who come to admire the area’s beauty and enjoy the many outdoor activities both on water and on land.
The lake is perfect for fishing, boating, swimming, kayaking, and other water activities. You can also go on a cruise at the historic Lake George Steamboat Company which has been serving tourists and passengers in the area since the early 1800s.
On the shores, there are miles of trails that can accommodate hikers and bikers of any skill level. There are also numerous campsites in the towns and cities around the lake, as well as on the state-owned islands that can be reached by boats and canoes.
The Town
With its rich history and great access to the lake, the Town of Lake George makes a great base for an adventure-filled holiday in the Adirondacks. You’ll find sunny beaches with swimming and picnic areas, independent local restaurants and pubs, and quaint shops and boutiques selling everything from outdoor gear and jewelry to gifts and knick-knacks.
The community regularly holds various events, including several summer concert series and annual festivities such as the Lake George Community Band Festival, Lake George Music Festival, and Lake George Jazz Weekend.
